Coub turns 12!

We have done a tremendous amount of work related to technical improvements: from updating components, some of which were 7-8 years outdated, to optimizing storage and fixing bugs that caused serious crashes. Most of these changes are not so noticeable for users, but now we have opened the way for large-scale platform updates without the risk of losing the content created over the years.

For the first time in several years, Coub has introduced exciting new features directly related to Coubs: The ability to see all interpretations of a single Coub through re-coub feeds. You can also create and participate in mobs and challenges. The option to choose your main feed, allowing you to see your own subscriptions, the Hot feed, or a random selection of Coubs. Fixed reaction counters that prevent users from artificially inflating reaction counts. Refined Sensitive content labels that allow users to appeal if their Coub is flagged and to disable sensitive content in their feeds. A new function for channel owners to pin one of their Coubs to the top of their channel. A new search algorithm that makes it easier to find Coubs by title. A simplified login and authorization process. The removal of over 4 million spam publications and a more difficult process for new accounts to create spam publications in violation of platform rules.

Story editor improvements include descriptions for each Coub and the ability to easily reorder them. Stories are now full-fledged publications, allowing you to curate thematic selections. The platform has launched a new feed design that's more versatile and scalable: elements are grouped by meaning, with new lists for tags and sources. The channel widget has been updated, and a «Share» button has been added to feed! A new «three dots» menu provides controls for managing your Coubs, downloading them, and viewing an up-to-date list of complaints based on current rules. This menu will also be the home for new coub-related features in the future. A list of sources has been added to the coub page if it was created from a video link or is a recoub.

This year, we eliminated all functional differences between the iOS and Android versions of the Coub app. We introduced a fully updated editor that includes all previously missing features. We redesigned the feed, creating «Full» and «Сompact» versions and adding the ability to choose between them. When viewing feeds, we increased the focus on video by hiding distracting elements. For authors, we added the display of statuses for published coubs. We added long taps to open lists of likes, reposts, and recoubs. You can also copy the contents of a tag this way! We unified the icons and overall look of the application. We updated the channel screen, added social media icons, and added the ability to change the channel link in the application. Chats have returned to iOS. The process of password recovery and updating to the current version now also takes place in the application.

The new algorithms for the «Hot» and «Trending» feeds that many have been waiting for are ready and will be launched soon. We will be moving away from communities: there will be more themes and thematic channels, and fewer publishing difficulties, moderation rules, and errors. There will be the possibility to run channels in co-authorship with other сoubers, and the editorial team will be able to quickly support community mobs and challenges. We will pay more attention to community-curated content and new recommendation algorithms that will suggest not only сoubs that are similar in mood, but also channels of authors that are potentially interesting to the viewer.

The ability to add a user to the blacklist has existed in Coub apps for many years, but it did not affect the display of coubs in the feeds. We plan to finalize the blocking of not only unwanted authors, but also topics for the entire platform. By the way, starting today we will stop showing the dislike counter – since its launch we have collected a large amount of data that will allow us to better configure the recommendation feeds by the time they are launched.

We will continue to improve the search: we will add the ability to search by multiple tags and channels. The notification system will also be updated: notifications about new publications by friends and reactions to your work will be returned, and notifications about platform updates will appear. We will not stop with the removal of spam: channels that annoy many in the subscriber lists are next.
