Where did the “?” come from?

A man in period clothing runs through a chaotic, burning village, surrounded by flames and smoke, as he is pursued by others in the same environment. The scene shifts to show a figure on horseback, silhouetted against the fire, before returning to the man fleeing through the inferno.
