A thick, weathered steel cable is fed into a large, circular metal die, where a mechanical press forces the cable's outer strands into the die's central opening, compressing and deforming the inner core material into a dense, lumpy mass. The die remains stationary while the cable is slowly advanced, causing the internal material to be squeezed out and compacted within the die's cavity.
