Three soldiers in World War I German uniforms are positioned in a trench filled with dry grass and dirt. The soldier on the right, wearing a helmet marked with the number 33, remains mostly stationary while the soldier on the left, bald and facing him, turns his head slightly. The soldier on the right, with a mustache, repeatedly brings his hand to his mouth and then lowers it, appearing to eat or drink something, while the other two observe.
